Particle saltation trajectories in supercritical open channel flows: Roughness effect

چکیده
Bed load sediment transport governed by particle saltation in supercritical open channel flows causes bedrock incision high-gradient mountain streams and hydro-abrasion at hydraulic structures. Hence, a better understanding of turbulent flow characteristics dynamics is prime importance for the prediction river landscape evolution, sustainable design To this end, we experimentally investigated single-particle over fixed planar abraded beds covering smooth, transitionally rough, hydraulically rough regimes. The experiments were performed Laboratory Hydraulics, Hydrology Glaciology (VAW) ETH Zürich wide range conditions with various width-to-depth aspect ratios (b/ho) Froude numbers (F). We motions five groups differing shape, hardness, diameter. By means high-speed camera, velocities trajectory parameters—such as hop height length—were determined using tracking velocimetry. results reveal that least 120 individual particles should be used tests to determine sound statistics trajectories. In present test conditions, are dominantly transported saltation. effects properties such shape diameter on trajectories negligible, while rolling probability given condition increases increasing roughness was found key parameter having significant effect horizontal energy transfer. Hop height, length, velocities, well transfer, increase bed roughness. Engineering particle trajectories in microfluidic flows using particle shape.
Recent advances in microfluidic technologies have created a demand for techniques to control the motion of flowing microparticles. Here we consider how the shape and geometric confinement of a rigid microparticle can be tailored for 'self-steering' under external flow. We find that an asymmetric particle, weakly confined in one direction and strongly confined in another, will align with the flo...

Several rigorous turbulent models have been developed in the past years and it can be seen that more research is needed to reach a better understanding of their generality and precision by verifying their applications for distinct hydraulic phenomena; under certain assumptions. This survey evaluates the performance of Standard k-ε, Realizable k-ε, RNG k-ε, k-ω and RSM models in predicting flow ...
متن کاملSurface Roughness Effects in Low Reynolds Number Channel Flows (Preprint)
Rarefied helium and nitrogen flow expanding into vacuum through 150μm high and 1.5 cm long channels is studied experimentally and numerically with the DSMC method. Different types of channel walls are examined, both polished and rough with well characterized roughness shaped as triangles and rectangles. The pressure varies from 200 to 13,000 Pa, with the gas mean free path being both much large...

− Reported here are some results obtained, from a calculus algorithm application that, based on known equation analytical solutions of water flow profiles, allows the study of steady-state, gradually varied flow in open channel networks. The procedure allows to calculate, in the case of slow water flow into gradually downward slope channels, in the direction of motion, the florates and water le...
